THREE PARENT ADOPTION IN OREGON
Beth Allen Law helped facilitate a rare three parent adoptions in Oregon
June 15, 2011

PORTLAND, OR—

Beth Allen Law PC managing partner, Beth A. Allen, finalized an adoption today that resulted in a rare three-parent adoption.  She represented a step-father who sought to become the legal parent of his wife’s biological children, but none of the three parents wanted to terminate the biological father’s rights.  When the step father sought legal assistance he was told by several lawyers that the biological parent’s parental rights had to be terminated for a step-parent adoption to be allowed.  In this instance, the biological father has been involved in the children’s lives, and all three parents desire that relationship to continue.

When Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Susan M. Svetkey signed the adoption papers today, she commented about how lucky the children were to have three loving parents, each of whom had different qualities that would help the children navigate their lives, and how wonderful it was that the parents recognized working together as a family was so much better than fighting over the children.  Beth Allen couldn’t agree more and says “when the step father arrived in our offices, he had already been told by a number of attorneys that it just can’t be done.  That’s just the type of challenge that makes my job fun, and I agreed to take the case.  I believe that children benefit when the adults who are parenting them all have legal recognition of their parentage.”
